(Proverbs 16:9) “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” In Hebrew, the word for deviseth carries the meaning of weaving, much like weaving a piece of cloth, describing how a person does not simply think of a plan at random but plans their future path very meticulously. God is not telling us not to plan, for He has bestowed us with talents and knowledge. However, we must recognize one reality: only the Lord can direct our steps. To direct here includes the meanings of establishing, making things firm, and achieving goals. We should certainly do our best to plan carefully according to the talents God has given us and should not be careless, but we must understand that what we see is limited. Only God can see through the future; He transcends time and space and knows our every day. Just like a brother, he once spent a great deal of effort planning his career, wholeheartedly wanting to enter a certain large company, only to have his wishes unfulfilled. Instead, he was hired by another less famous company. But he later discovered that he was better able to utilize his strengths in that company, eventually achieving great success. Many times, things develop in this way. Whether it is our own careers or parents choosing schools for their children, we will do our best to plan, but only God can bring things to pass and lead us into the most suitable positions. Therefore, while executing our plans, we must always prick up our ears to listen to God’s voice, as He will surely lead us onto the best path.
