(Proverbs 19:19)
“A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.”
This is a very interesting verse. In the original Hebrew, the word for great wrath actually carries a connotation of being poisonous. It is just like when a person is angry, they often flush red, their blood pressure rises, and their whole body becomes highly agitated. In ancient times, people believed that those bitten by a poisonous snake would exhibit similar reactions, such as fever, heat, and agitation, so they connected the two together. When a person is extremely angry, it is as if they are spraying venom, which not only hurts themselves but also harms the people around them. The verse mentions that a man of great wrath shall suffer punishment, which means he must bear the corresponding responsibility legally or behaviorally. Because anger causes people to do wrong things and break the law, thereby hurting others, they must face the consequences of fines or even criminal penalties.
Next, the verse says, for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again. The meaning of this sentence is that if you try to help him clean up his mess and handle those chaotic situations, you will have to keep doing so in the future. Because such a person often has not truly repented, every time he causes an incident or creates trouble, you have to go and resolve it for him. Doing this actually does not help him at all, and it can even harm you and others. This is what we often call doing bad things out of good intentions. When a person decides on their own to indulge their anger and do things that harm themselves and others, they must bear that consequence themselves. Therefore, we must never do bad things out of good intentions, but should instead pray for him, hoping that he will have a day of repentance.
