Man proposes, God disposes

(Proverbs 19:21)
“There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.”

The word devices in this verse carries a connotation of weaving in Hebrew, much like weaving cloth. This describes how we have numerous, highly complex, and closely-knit plans in our lives, and these plans are laid out with great care and effort, rather than being done half-heartedly.
The second half of the verse is very interesting: nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. The word counsel here is used to contrast with devices. In Hebrew, counsel refers to God’s supreme and unshakable will. Only God’s will can stand, and to stand means to succeed. In other words, only God’s supreme will is the ultimate outcome.

Some people might then ask, since God’s will is the ultimate outcome no matter what, does that mean we don’t need to make plans? Of course not. This verse simply tells us a reality: no matter how meticulous or intelligent human thoughts may be, they are very limited; but our supreme God and eternal Lord alone is infinite, which is why His will is what ultimately stands.
The Bible never tells us not to make plans. We can plan by relying on our own wisdom and experience, but what we are told here is that we must ultimately commit our plans to God and let His will fulfill them. When we completely surrender our plans to God, we actually feel a deep sense of peace in our hearts. Just think about it, if we carry the full weight of a plan all by ourselves, the anxiety over success or failure would make us incredibly tense. But once we finish planning and then hand it over to God, letting His will guide us, we will feel relieved. We cannot be lazy; it is not right to just slack off and make no plans at all. We can have plenty of regulations and arrangements in our work, but ultimately, God alone is the master of our future.
Therefore, I encourage everyone to keep making plans, using the wisdom and intelligence that God has given us, but at the same time, commit those plans to God and wait for His will to be accomplished. God’s will is the absolute best for us because He is our Heavenly Father. I often tell my brothers and sisters that God will never pick a dark path for us to walk on, so we should trust Him with all our hearts.
