Is moving fast really a good thing in this world?

(Proverbs 19:2)
“Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.”

Two things are mentioned here: what is inside the heart, and the outward actions. In the Hebrew context, a soul without knowledge does not refer to a lack of general knowledge or being poorly educated. Instead, it means that inside our hearts, we do not seek or care about God, have no interest in things concerning Him, and do not seek His will. Not good simply means it is bad. If in our hearts we treat God as if He does not exist, ignoring Him and disregarding Him, that is a bad thing. On the other hand, he that hasteth with his feet sinneth refers to being highly impulsive when making decisions. Hasting with the feet is an action, and it leads to sin because we do not take God seriously in our hearts and ignore His rules and principles. Coupled with swift actions, big trouble will inevitably follow, surely leading to sin and deviating from God’s path. The word for sin in the original text carries the meaning of an arrow missing its target.

If we do not take God seriously in our hearts, even if we are Christians, we might only treat Him as a form of spiritual comfort rather than the sole standard of our lives. Thinking this way, combined with the rush to do everything in this current generation, leads to very hasty decisions. For example, some people invest simply because they see everyone else doing it and blindly follow along, which ends up causing major disaster and heavy losses. Or they might quickly kick off a project because they completely disregard God in their hearts and lack His guidance; even if He tries to guide them, they just ignore it. Adding an impulsive decision to that mix will surely lead to big trouble.

What should we do then? Of course, the very first thing is never to let the soul be without knowledge. In our hearts, we must desire to receive God’s guidance and listen to the words of the Bible. When we make decisions, because we have God’s guidance in our hearts, we need to slow down a bit, see things more clearly, and observe more carefully before deciding. This makes things much safer. In this society where everything demands speed, we must slow down, otherwise, it is very easy to make the wrong decisions.
