(Proverbs 16:20)
“He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.”
In Hebrew, to handle wisely or heed instruction means to observe carefully and put into practice. Simply reading or reciting is not enough; the teachings of the Bible should become the sole guide for our lives and existence. We must constantly practice applying biblical principles to our daily lives. If we can put them into action, we will surely find good. The word good in its original literal sense refers even more to material provision and abundance. As long as we live according to the Lord’s principles, God will surely provide what we need.
As for trusting in the Lord, the original text carries the meaning of completely entrusting one’s body weight to or leaning upon an object. Imagine the state of being completely effortless and thoroughly relaxed, like sitting back on a sofa; that is what trust is. Whether circumstances are favorable or adverse, and especially in times of adversity, we must learn to relax completely and lean on the unshakable God. This blessing is different from the material good mentioned earlier; it is more about a close relationship between us and God, an inner harmony and satisfaction of the soul, and this kind of blessing is eternal.
We should not try to change the current situation with our own strength, for no one can do so except God. Some people find it ridiculous to thank the Lord every day for the air they breathe, but in fact, it is not a given that the earth has air. We must know how to be grateful in the simple details of daily life, because everything is not to be taken for granted. When we learn to trust in God, life can become easy, because He is the only one who is absolutely reliable; He will not betray you, nor will He discriminate against you.
