(Proverbs 16:17)
“The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.”
The so-called upright person does not refer to a flawless individual, but rather to someone whose core life values are perfectly aligned with Biblical truth. In the original text, uprightness represents a kind of straightness without curvature, an accuracy similar to that of a builder’s measurement. When a person’s values are set to this standard, the path they walk will naturally lead away from evil.
The departure mentioned here is not merely taking a slight detour or avoiding something; it is a 180-degree turn. When we discover bad things or temptations ahead, we should immediately turn back, neither participating nor touching them.
To keep one’s way is like a soldier on a city wall; one must remain constantly alert, watching without sleep. This is a continuous and proactive responsibility.
We cannot be intentionally cautious only in a certain month or at a specific time; instead, we must be watchful at all times, as this concerns the preservation of our character and soul. As an upright person, when we find evil things in life that do not align with the truth, we should decisively turn and walk away, never trying them out of curiosity.
