“懶惰使人沉睡.懈怠的人,必受飢餓。”
在希伯來文的語境裡面,「懶惰」其實有著很深刻的屬靈含意。它並不是單純指我們肉體上的睡覺、偷懶或躺在沙發上不願意動,而是一種對於神的教導或吩咐抱持著無動於衷、不肯回應的態度。當我們對神的命令採取這種不回應的態度時,後果就是會使人沉睡。這種沉睡同樣不是指肉體上的睡眠,而是一種靈性上的麻木。當我們對神的回應變得麻木,下一次神再對我們說話、再次呼召我們的時候,我們就會開始聽不見了。
而經文後半句所提到的「懈怠的人必受飢餓」,其中的「懈怠」,在原文中形容的就像是一把鬆弛、無法拿來射箭的弓。用現代人的話來說,就是一種「躺平」的狀態。但這種躺平不僅僅是行為上的放鬆,它更包含了一種對神的不忠誠與欺騙,是一種自欺欺人的屬靈狀態。這種懈怠所帶來的後果是必受飢餓。這裡的飢餓指的往往不只是物質生活上的貧乏,更是我們身心靈深處那種極度的空虛與飢渴。
我們現代人的生活,我們最常犯的屬靈懶惰,其實就是不停地滑手機。很多人會自我感覺良好,覺得自己每天手指動個不停,忙著回覆訊息、忙著看社交媒體、忙著刷影片,日子過得忙碌無比,怎麼能算是懶惰呢?但事實上,這種忙碌本質上是一種主動的逃避。我們用這些滑手機的瑣事,來逃避神對我們的呼召與命令。表面上我們的雙手和大腦一刻都沒有停下來,但這在神的眼中就是一種屬靈的懶惰。當我們耽溺於這種假忙碌時,我們對神的敏感度就會大幅降低,最終導致靈性麻木。
如果我們再進一步審視,會發現我們常常用各種生活上的忙碌來欺騙自己。我們每天做這件事、做那件事,忙得不可開交,甚至覺得自己連休息的時間都沒有。但是,我們所忙碌的這些事情,真的是神要我們去做的事嗎?很多時候,我們只是在做一些神不喜悅的事,卻把真正重要、神所吩咐的事拋諸腦後。當我們深陷在這種為了忙碌而忙碌的「假忙碌」當中時,即使每天的時數填得很滿,我們的心靈依然會感到極度的空虛,這就是身心靈正在承受飢餓的記號。
因此,我們需要坐下來好好反思。神並不是要求我們像機器一樣永遠不能停手、不准休息,聖經也告訴我們需要有足夠的放鬆與休息。關鍵在於,當我們在工作、在忙碌的時候,我們所做的是否是有意義、且符合神心意的事。我們應該藉此機會,去檢視一下自己日常生活的常規與作息表,看看自己每天在忙的究竟是什麼。如果是那些沒有意義的假忙碌,那不管多累都是徒勞。我們必須對神保持一顆敏銳的心,才不至於讓自己陷入這種無事忙的麻木狀態中。

“Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.”
In the Hebrew context, slothfulness actually carries a very profound spiritual meaning. It does not simply refer to our physical sleeping, being lazy, or lying on the sofa unwilling to move. Rather, it represents an indifferent and un採取ing attitude toward God’s teachings or commands. When we adopt this non-responsive attitude toward God’s mandates, the consequence is that it casts us into a deep sleep. Similarly, this deep sleep does not mean physical slumber, but a form of spiritual numbness. When our response to God becomes numb, the next time He speaks to us or calls us again, we will begin to be unable to hear Him.
As for the latter half of the verse, an idle soul shall suffer hunger, the word idleness in the original text describes something like a slack bow that cannot be used to shoot arrows. In modern terms, it is a state of lying flat. However, this lying flat is not just a relaxation of behavior; it encompasses a form of disloyalty and deception toward God, serving as a self-deceiving spiritual state. The consequence brought by this idleness is that one will inevitably suffer hunger. The hunger mentioned here often refers not merely to poverty in material life, but to that ultimate emptiness and thirst in the depths of our body, mind, and spirit.
In our modern lives, the most common spiritual slothfulness we commit is actually constantly scrolling on our phones. Many people feel good about themselves, thinking that since their fingers are moving non-stop every day, busy replying to messages, busy checking social media, and busy watching videos, their days are incredibly occupied, so how can they be considered slothful? But in reality, this kind of busyness is essentially an active evasion. We use these trivial matters of phone scrolling to escape God’s calling and commands to us. On the surface, our hands and brains never stop for a single moment, but in the eyes of God, this is a form of spiritual slothfulness. When we indulge in this fake busyness, our sensitivity to God drops drastically, ultimately leading to spiritual numbness.
If we examine it further, we will find that we often use various kinds of worldly busyness to deceive ourselves. We do this thing and that thing every day, getting hopelessly tied up, even feeling like we do not have any time to rest. However, are these things we are busy with truly what God wants us to do? Many times, we are just doing things that displease God, while throwing the truly important matters commanded by Him to the back of our minds. When we are deeply trapped in this fake busyness for the sake of being busy, even if our daily schedule is packed tight, our spirits will still feel extremely empty. This is the sign that our body, mind, and spirit are suffering from hunger.
Therefore, we need to sit down and reflect properly. God does not demand us to be like machines that can never stop working and are never allowed to rest; the Bible also tells us that we need to have sufficient relaxation and rest. The key lies in whether what we are doing when we work and keep busy is meaningful and aligned with God’s heart. We should take this opportunity to examine our daily routines and schedules, looking at what we are actually busy with every day. If it is just meaningless fake busyness, then no matter how tired we get, it is all in vain. We must maintain a sharp and sensitive heart toward God, so that we do not fall into this numb state of being busy doing nothing.
