(Proverbs 18:21)
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Every word we speak actually carries immense power.
In the context of the Hebrew language, the tongue represents speech, and the original meaning of the word for power is actually a hand. This implies that our words are like a powerful hand capable of governing life and death. This is not an exaggerated rhetoric, but a practical reminder from the Bible about the extreme seriousness of speech. We must be mindful of our words and express ourselves with great care and caution.
If what we say is positive, constructive, and aligned with biblical principles, it will not only help ourselves but also become a blessing to others. Conversely, if we always carelessly say things we should not, we must bear the consequences that follow. Because every word we utter is like a seed that will one day bear its corresponding fruit. This does not mean we cannot chat casually, but it requires us to understand that spoken words are like spilled water that cannot be gathered back, and we must take responsibility for the words we speak.
The Bible always encourages us to use our words to edify and build up others, while also building up ourselves. When we exercise the authority of speech in this way, it brings about a positive impact. If we constantly grumble, complain, and release negative energy, not only will those who listen become unhappy, but we ourselves will also sink into a whirlpool of misery.
Therefore, starting from today, we might as well observe more closely what we usually say on a daily basis. Are we speaking words that bring unhappiness and negativity to ourselves and others, or are we speaking words that are full of positive energy, aligned with biblical teachings, and capable of encouraging others as well as inspiring ourselves?
