Is the World You See Beautiful or Gloomy?

(Proverbs 15:15)
“All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.”

This verse presents a powerful contrast. The so-called days of the afflicted refer to a person whose soul is unhappy. Whether due to being mistreated, encountering setbacks, or internal vexation, the world they look out upon appears gloomy. This does not mean they face literal disasters every day; rather, because their state of mind is miserable, everything they see feels disagreeable. It is like when one feels unwell at heart—even brilliant sunshine can feel piercing and irritating.

Conversely, a person with a merry heart (which in Hebrew refers to a “good heart”) possesses a spirit that is positive and joyful. When the heart is filled with joy and ease, the world one looks upon naturally becomes beautiful. Even on days with thick clouds and torrential rain, such a person can still perceive the beauty of the rain nourishing the earth.

This teaches us a vital principle: our perception of our environment is deeply influenced by our internal state.
Many people often complain that life is not going well, feeling that everything makes them unhappy, but the issue often lies not in the events themselves but in our mindset. If our heart is merry, we will view difficulties as challenges and see adversity as a form of refining.

So, how can we possess a merry heart? The key lies in our relationship with God. When we live according to God’s principles and stay in step with Him, our hearts naturally become upright and cheerful, and the perspective through which we see the world changes accordingly.

As you prepare for work or school today, you might want to examine your own mood. Is your heart joyful right now, or is it sorrowful? Remember, your heart determines how you experience this world.
