The secret of prevailing prayer

(Matthew 6:7-8)
“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knowest what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”

In these verses, Jesus warns believers not to follow the example of those who don’t believe. Such people imagine that using many words or repeating themselves frequently will force God to hear them. In the original Greek, this behavior suggests a mechanical and meaningless babbling, similar to the repetitive ticking of a machine.

Believers should understand these core principles of prayer:

1. Prayer is not a transaction with God
We shouldn’t have the mindset that if we work hard enough, kneel long enough, or pray often enough, God is obligated to listen to us. Prayer is not a way to bargain for grace; God is never controlled by our outward performances.
2. God already knows our needs
The Bible clearly states that even before we open our mouths to ask, our Heavenly Father already knows what we need in life. This doesn’t mean we don’t need to pray; rather, it allows us to let go of the burden of feeling like we must explain every detail before God can understand.
3. The heart of prayer is relationship and communion
The most important purpose of prayer is to build a parent-child relationship with our Heavenly Father. Just as a child talks with their father, it shouldn’t be about pestering him for money, but about the value of spending quality time together. To pray is to speak with God from the heart, to enjoy the sweetness of His presence, and to engage in a two-way conversation.
