(Matthew 6:1)
“Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.”
Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. The phrase be careful is in the present tense, meaning we must remain vigilant and constantly remind ourselves. In the context of that time, righteousness refers to all religious activities, such as prayer, fasting, giving to the needy, and reading the scriptures. We should not show off our piety as if performing on a stage. If we do good deeds solely to receive praise from others, then we have already received our reward from men and will not receive any from our Heavenly Father. Everything we do—whether it is reading the Bible, praying, or giving—should be directed solely toward the Father and come from the heart.
