(Proverbs 21:2)
“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.”
This statement is incredibly true in real life, as we often feel that what we do is right. It is easy for everyone to look at themselves and feel self-righteous.
What the scripture refers to as every way of a man means the path of our lives. In our own eyes, this is a straight, unbending path, meaning we do not think we have done anything wrong. However, the latter half of the verse is spectacular, mentioning that only the Lord pondereth the hearts. In Hebrew, this pondering refers to a highly precise scale. When God looks at us, He does not look at outward appearances, but rather weighs our hearts.
This heart represents our motives, intellect, emotions, and hidden intentions. When God comes to weigh our hearts, nothing can remain hidden. This verse reminds us never to be proud and not to assume that everything we do is right. Only God can see through us most thoroughly. Sometimes we think we are right, but we might actually be wrong. God measures us according to His standard, and this standard is already written in the Bible, guiding and directing us through the Holy Spirit.
In today’s generation, this is closely relevant to the social media we often talk about. Nowadays, anyone from a three-year-old child to an eighty-year-old elder goes online, and some even use artificial intelligence. When we publish a post on social media and receive many likes, we might feel good about ourselves and believe that what we say must be correct. But this is not necessarily the truth. Within the echo chambers we live in, everyone shares similar thoughts, making it easy to huddle together for warmth. We must not become complacent under such circumstances. Instead, we should pray for the Lord’s Holy Spirit to examine and illuminate us, because only God knows all the motives within our hearts. We need to humble ourselves before God and ask for the Lord’s help.
