In the original Hebrew text, this is a highly satirical technique. The expression my son in the scripture is a very affectionate title, just like the earnest and meaningful way God addresses us, a master addresses a disciple, or a father addresses a son. In Hebrew, the word instruction encompasses both good and bad instruction, and what is referred to here is actually bad instruction. In other words, this statement reminds us that once we listen to those fallacies and erroneous knowledge, the consequence is that a person’s behavior will inevitably deviate, sin, and depart from God. It is like sarcastically saying, go ahead and listen to those bad things and fallacies, and you will certainly face misfortune next.
Applying this principle to our environment today, especially in the current internet world and social media, actually offers a profound revelation. We must never think that it does no harm to just listen a little to those things that are not so good, assuming that we will not be affected because we know how to discern. In reality, this content truly affects us. This verse is precisely warning us that our ears are the first line of defense. (Proverbs 19:27) “Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.” If we listen to too much trash information, our manifested behavior will become trash as well. Nowadays, many people often look only at the titles of posts, or blindly follow those KOLs who have hundreds of thousands of followers, believing that whatever they say must be right, without knowing that the other party might just be spreading erroneous information. When we believe these words, these errors will enter our hearts.
Therefore, just because a crowd of people rushes to do something does not mean it is right. We absolutely cannot adopt the mindset that looking and listening a bit is no problem. The Bible tells us that hearing is the first line of defense; when one hears a lot, or hears things multiple times, one naturally comes to believe. Just as hearing the Bible more generates faith, if we listen to too many wrong things over and over again, our beliefs will gradually waver, and we might even follow those erroneous remarks in action, blindly drifting with the tide. In an internet era where many things are difficult to verify, we must be doubly careful and cautiously choose what we see and hear every day, because whether it is watching YouTube or listening to other information, we are essentially receiving these messages. Nowadays, what we receive the most each day is often not what the people around us say, but the remarks disseminated to us on the internet, so we truly need to be exceptionally careful.
