The Fire of Envy Consumes Life

(Proverbs 14:30)
“A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.”

In the original Hebrew, the word for peace or quietness in the phrase a sound heart shares the same root as the word for healing. This signifies that when a person’s inner self receives healing and restoration, this tranquility becomes the life of the flesh. It means that the healing of the soul brings health to the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. This kind of health is abundant and vibrant.

In contrast, there is envy. In the original Hebrew, envy carries the connotation of heat or burning, often referred to as the fire of envy. The scripture describes envy as the rottenness of the bones, which is a form of corrosion starting from the very core. This is not a superficial wound, but rather a depletion that begins from the depths of the heart. It leaves a person appearing fine on the outside, while the inside has already begun to decay. Envy consumes a person’s vitality, causing both the soul and the body to wither away.

Therefore, we must learn to let go of comparison and jealousy, turning instead to the Lord to seek that peace which heals the soul. When we see others doing well, if they are deserving, then let us rejoice for them. If they are undeserving, the Heavenly Father has His own judgment. Simply put, how others are doing has nothing to do with us. We only need to fulfill our own part and look up to our Heavenly Father.
