(Proverbs 14:29)
“He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.”
In the original Hebrew, the phrase slow to wrath describes a person possessing a very, very long nose. Within the culture of that time, anger was figuratively described as fire coming from the nostrils. If a person has a very long nose, when the fire of anger ignites in their heart, the heat must travel through a long passage before it can be released. This process takes a long time, and by then, the fire is nearly extinguished. Those who possess this long nose trait gain understanding, which is the insight that allows them to see the full picture of a situation and analyze the current state of affairs calmly, thereby achieving victory in various circumstances.
Conversely, the Hebrew text describes a person with a hasty spirit as having short breath. The anger of such a person erupts very quickly, and once they lose their temper, they exalt folly. This means they are announcing to everyone around them that they are someone who cannot control their emotions and possesses a violent temperament. In a state of losing emotional control, a person’s eyes are blinded by rage, making them unable to see the truth of the matter. This makes it extremely easy to fail when arguing or communicating with others. Therefore, we must learn to stay calm and ask the Lord to grant us the strength to possess that long nose symbolizing tolerance. By learning to control our emotions and not being easily provoked to anger, we can achieve victory in our lives.
