You reap what you sow, do you believe it?

(Galatians 6:7-8)
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”

We open Galatians 6:7-8 to reflect once again on the life principle of sowing and reaping.
The scripture reminds us not to be deceived, for God is not to be mocked. In the original Greek, the word for mocked carries the connotation of turning up one’s nose or treated with contempt. This reflects how some people appear very devout on the surface, participating in various religious activities and offerings, yet in the depths of their hearts, they are actually attempting to deceive God. Such individuals believe that as long as the outward appearance is good, God will not see their inner motives; however, in truth, God discerns all things, and one simply cannot play tricks before Him.
Paul uses the metaphor of a farmer planting a field to emphasize an inevitable law: a man reaps what he sows. This is a process in the present continuous tense; our daily life choices, the use of our money, and the investment of our energy are all, in fact, acts of sowing. If we sow to please the flesh, investing our lives in selfishness, greed, vanity, or feigned piety, what we reap will inevitably be destruction. In the original text, this destruction refers to decay and disintegration, signifying that life will ultimately come to nothing and lose its eternal value.
Conversely, if we sow to please the Spirit, investing our lives, time, and efforts into following God’s will, we will reap eternal life from the Spirit. This eternal life is not merely a matter of duration in time, but a quality of life that is connected with God, abundant and meaningful.
This passage provides us with a solemn warning as well as a clear direction. False piety might hide from human eyes or even deceive one’s own heart, but before the God who cannot be mocked, everything will be laid bare.
In this new year, let us resolve to invest our lives in the right soil. Stop consuming ourselves in selfish desires and falsehood, and instead, truly submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. For every single seed we sow today determines our future harvest. May we all sow within the will of God and ultimately reap that heavenly peace and abundant life.
