(Matthew 6:13)
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
We ask God not to let us enter into temptation, which often stems from the evil thoughts deep within our hearts—what the Bible calls lusts—that frequently lead us into the trap of sin. As humans are weak, we urgently need God’s protection to keep us from falling into these snares.
At the same time, we pray for God to deliver us from evil. The word deliver here is extremely urgent, much like pulling someone who has fallen into water back to the shore immediately. Evil typically refers to the devil, Satan. Whether it is the pull of internal lusts or the attack of external evil ones, God provides us with comprehensive protection.
The scripture concludes with a doxology, reminding us to shift our gaze away from our own weaknesses and the hardships of our environment toward the Father who possesses sovereignty, power, and glory. Kingdom represents God’s sovereignty and presence; Power refers to the might of the Holy Spirit, the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead and triumphed over death; and Glory is the eternal brilliance that God deserves.
When we stop staring at our difficulties and instead fix our eyes upon our Heavenly Father, He will surely lead us across one obstacle after another to live a holy and victorious life. May the precious blood of Jesus Christ cover and heal us, supplying our daily needs. Glory be to the Lord. Amen!
