(Matthew 6:22-23)
“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!”
Using the eyes as a metaphor, the scripture points out that the eye is the lamp of the body. This passage does not mean that our eyes emit light, but rather views the eye as the sole window of life. Whether light can enter a room depends entirely on whether this window is clear and transparent. In the context of that time, what was meant by healthy or clear did not refer to the quality of one’s eyesight, but rather to whether a person’s values were focused on God and whether they possessed a generous rather than greedy heart.
When our life’s focus is aligned with God and not confused by materialism or money, this window of the soul is clean and bright. Consequently, God’s light can enter our lives without any hindrance, filling the entire person with light. Conversely, if a person’s values become distorted and their heart is filled with greed and an obsession with wealth, this window becomes filthy. When light cannot enter, the inner life falls into great darkness.
Jesus reminds us that money is essentially a neutral tool; the key lies in how we perceive it. If we can recalibrate our values and refuse to be slaves to money, our lives can reflect the glory of God. We ask the Lord to heal and provide for us, letting the precious blood of Christ cover us so that we may maintain a clear mind in our daily toil and keep the lamp of life burning constantly.
