神秘的單字:希臘文原意揭開日用糧的真正秘密 The Mysterious Word: Revealing the True Secret of Daily Bread through Original Greek Meaning

(Matthew 6:11)
“Give us this day our daily bread.”

In this verse, there is a very special word, which is daily. In the original Greek text, this word is quite mysterious because, among numerous ancient Greek documents and the entire Bible, it appears only in the Lord’s Prayer within the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Some scholars believe this was a term specifically coined by the biblical authors to precisely convey Jesus’ meaning. Its original meaning encompasses the ideas of being continuous, daily, and even for the coming day. This signifies that God’s provision is inexhaustible and will never cease.

The phrase give us this day emphasizes the immediacy of the provision. This leads us to reflect on two mistaken mindsets regarding material provision in our lives: worry and greed. When we worry about whether there will be enough food for tomorrow, Jesus reminds us that our Heavenly Father knows our needs. At the same time, this deals with our greed. We often want to hoard more, but the word daily implies the meaning of enough. It is just like the Israelites of old gathering manna in the wilderness, where they could only take the portion for that day, and any excess would spoil.

This teaches us that we must personally come before God every day to receive the grace of the day. We do not need to be anxious about a tomorrow that has not yet arrived, nor do we need to hoard excessively out of greed. The Heavenly Father’s grace is like the dawn, new every morning and just enough.

Let us examine ourselves in prayer to see if there is any greed or worry. May the Lord forgive our unbelief and heal our hearts, so that we may receive the perfectly timed grace He bestows today with a heart of contentment and gratitude. May this peace and provision from above accompany us through a day filled with hope.
